We all know now the importance of creating and maintaining boundaries on what behavior we will accept from others in their treatment of us.
Looking back, I’ve always been fairly good at this. Not perfect, but pretty good.
I think a bigger problem for me is instead of creating boundaries I have sometimes created barriers. Rather than a simple fence to let people know where to stop, I’ve erected tall, thick, stone walls that no one is going to be able to pass.
It’s probably an unconscious defense mechanism to make sure I don’t get hurt. Which sometimes is good. Sometimes, though, I think it has probably kept out people that I would have been better off letting in.
I’m mentioning this in case you might be in this situation as well. Are you building boundaries or barriers?
