Reevaluating the Comfort Zone

dreamstime_xs_78291830For as long as I can remember, I have believed in constantly expanding our comfort zone.  Before I had heard the term, I believed that we should keep trying new things even if we were not comfortable with it or if it scared us.

Recently I had a conversation with a young woman that has made me reevaluate the concept of always going beyond our comfort zone.

We were discussing possible career options for her.  At one point, she said something to the effect that she knew she should step out of her comfort zone and try something new, but that she really liked her job.  She liked the work she did, she liked her co-workers, and she liked her clients.  It wasn’t just that she was comfortable, it was that she truly felt that this was the right place for her.

I have been thinking about that quite a bit.  What happens when we find where we belong?  Do we need to move beyond that?  Will it benefit us to do so?  Being where we want to be is not the same thing as settling for what we have after all.

I believe in life-long learning.  As long as we continue to learn, maybe we are also expanding our comfort zone.  But maybe, at some points in our lives at least, we can enjoy what we have and where we are without pushing to go the next point.  I’m still not sure.  What do you think?
